I was fishing upstream from a wing dike. The water depth was around 22 feet. I was using 6 ounces of weight. The fish hit hard and started ripping line off the reel. I set the hook and missed him. After a few moments of being in Awe of the power of the run I missed, I baited back up and cast back to the same spot. Within 5
minutes I had exactly the same kind of hit with a run like a streak of lightning.
I laid into him and he didn't slow down. It was a give
and take battle. There was a lot of time spent with him
below the boat and me putting as much pressure as I
dared on him, yet each of us just holding our own. I was
tired out after 15 minutes but it took 30 minutes to get
him to the side of the boat. After getting him into the
net and taking a few pictures, this beauty was
immediately released. |

I was fishing the Ohio River with my Dad when these
two 10 pound flatheads hit within 5 seconds of each other. We were anchored in about 10 feet of water and casting towards shore in about 4 feet of water at the point where a small tributary entered the main river. The river was on a fast rise and was about 3 feet above normal summer pool. The
two fish hit within about 20 yards of each other. |

I had been fishing for about 4 hours without a bite and decided to give it a little longer. Just then this flathead took the bait. It was a very light bite, just 4 clicks on my Penn 209 reel. About 20 seconds later it took off kind of steady. I set the hook and the fight was on. The water that night was running about 1 foot higher than normal and I was fishing from the bank casting to the center of the river which was about 7 feet deep. |

We were just setting our lines in the water. I had one pole in, and was rigging up another. I saw the rod begin to bounce, I ran over and it was running, I set the drag and set the hook, and pulled in this
catfish. |

Rod was placed in rod holder baited with 6" blue gill fishing for a 30 lb flathead cat I put in pond last year. Rod was set at dark and checked next morning no flathead but caught this 14 lb channel. It is hard to catch the flathead for the large channels between eight and sixteen lbs I have caught about 15 this year in that weight range. Have caught the flathead twice and he broke 50 lb Spider wire with me trying to get him on bank with no
net. Needless to say I now own a dip net. |
