Fish Tale of the Catch:
This cat hit at 2:20 on live gill thrown at a log in a ft and a half of water. It didnt run too much until it got close to boat then it got tangled up in 5 other lines, the trolling motor and then the anchor rope. I finally got it to where I could get a gaff in its lip and boat it.

Fish Tale of the Catch:
I was fishing for blue cats anchored in one of my favorite spots. I had a decent morning with the blues with the biggest being 28 lbs. Well , it was about time to call it a morning when one of my rods slowly started bending towards the water. I grabbed it up and set the hook. This fish didn't want to come off of the bottom, I new it as a pretty good one. When I finally got it to the top I could see it was a flathead. After netting it and getting it in the boat, I just set down and looked at it for a minute. It was by far my biggest flathead. I don't target flatheads that much, it was a nice suprise. A guy that was coming up the lake was nice enough to pull up and take my picture with it.

Fish Tale of the Catch:
Well we had been anchored and catching fish when the wind picked up and blew us off of our hole. We then decided to set up and drift over the hole we were fishing. After about 30 mins of drifting I told my uncle (who was fishing with me)the rods should almost be over the hole. Just then the rods started jumping. The big girl hammered the shad. She almost spooled us 3 times when we decided to pick up the bags and just follow her around. After 45 mins we got her in the boat. I had just caught a 60lb fish earlier in the week and told my uncle this fish blows that one out of the water. Well I was right 76lbs. The biggest fish I had ever caught. After a few pictures we returned her to the water to be caught again.

Well, this fish was caught after a slow morning of fishing. Caught him on cut shad. He took about 40 min to boat. That's a lot of fish to bring over the side of the boat by yourself.

Started out fishing for Flat Heads, caught a few. Then I decided to throw out some cut bait. It wasn't an hour until I got the fish on. I fought the fish for a good fifteen minutes before he surfaced. Caught several other fish that night too; but nothing like that one.

Started fishing the mouth of a feeder creek at about 8:30pm with ten rods on the bottom. We were using a variety of live bream, cut bream and live and cut eels. After fishing for about 45 minutes or so, caught the channel, it was 20.7lbs and put up a good fight in the heavy current.

Fish Tale of the Catch:
My friend Jason and I had been out all evening, and caught 3 small blues before dark and nothing had hit for hours after. Jason had to work the next morning, so he offered to let me keep his boat for the night, and he would head home to get some sleep. Over an hour passed without a hint of a bite. When I finally decided to leave I moved to the front of the boat to begin getting in the rods when one of the back bait runners began to run. I put the front rod back in the holder and grabbed the rod, quickly setting the hook. The fish fought nicely, and had me convinced that it was a nice blue. When I got the fish to the boat I noticed it had a different build to it than that of a blue cat, so I turned on the white lights and saw the awesome gold color of the fish. I called Jason immediately and told him that I believed I had just landed the new state record channel cat. He had just arrived in his drive when the call came and told me where to find some stringers. I stayed at the river as long as I could trying to keep the fish alive, but before I reached Custom Marine Fabricators to have it certified it died inside my cooler full of river water. It was caught at 2 AM and weighed approximately 20 lbs, but was not certified until 7:45 AM when it weighed in at 18 lbs 5.44 oz. I then drove the fish to Kinston to meet with Bob Barwick, a North Carolina Wildlife Biologist who confirmed the fish to be the new state record.

Fish Tale of the Catch:
i never have been striper fishing before. So when a fellow member greggofish (Greg Griffin) offered to take me to Weldon to fish for strippers....I jumped at the chance! The water was still kind of cold for the stripers at Weldon and the bite was slow, so Greg and his brother David, decided to go down river to see if the striper bite was better. We traveled about 10 miles when Greg decided we would give this good looking river bend a try. We baited up (bass shiners) and threw our lines out. i casted toward the shore. My line was in the water for about 10 minutes when Greg yelled " john your rod". the fish hit so hard it turned the driftmaster rod holder. it was tough getting the rod out of the holder the fish had so much pressure on it. i got it out...and started to reel, the fish was strong and was using the current to it's advantage. it took me about 15 minutes to finally get the fish in. At first when i saw it I was disappointed..." I thought dang it's a catfish", we were thinking it was a GIANT STRIPER. Don't get me wrong I love catching cats but we were fishing for stripers. As we landed the fish Greg and David immediately said "that's a channel, that's the new state record... if you want it" i said heck yeah! Well next came the task of getting the fish weighed with state certified scales and verified by a Sate Biologist. i called Kirk Rundle. Kirk is a Biologist for the state of NC. We agreed to meet at Weldon the following day so he could verify the fish. He advised me I had to have the fish weighed before meeting with him. What luck Greg somehow knew the state record would be caught from his boat, he had the necessary application for the sate record in his boat, We spent about 3 hours searching for a place to weigh the fish. Finally, we ended up at Atlas Fish Market in down town Roanoke. We weighed the fish on the scales....16 lbs. even. The fish went back into the livewell. All along my intentions were to cpr. the fish but that became increasingly difficult when I had to wait a day for the Biologist to verify the fish. I checked on it around midnight and it was fine. Somewhere between midnight and 6 am the fish died. We met Kirk at the ramp at Weldon to verify the fish. After counting the Anal Rays about 3 times...(it was killing me) he concluded that in fact it was a channel and that is was the new state record! kirk asked me what I was going to do with the fish and I said I didn't know. He asked me if I would be interested in donating it to the Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh. I said yes. A special thanks goes out to Greg and David Griffin. I would not have caught that fish if it were not for those guys and a very special thanks goes out to the BOC, who if it were not for the BOC I would have probably never met them guys.... So thanks to all who made it possible!!!!
